When teaching, the most common questions I am asked is,
"How can I get rid of audition nerves?" I'm sorry to say I don't
believe nerves every go away completely. The process of auditioning, and being
judged by a group of people you don't know, is frightening at best. The trick
is to not let your nerves control your performance.
Experience and preparation are going to be your best
friends. The more you audition the more comfortable you will become. The more
opportunities you have the more you will be able to think of your auditions
more like a performance. Audition like it's your chance to perform for new
people who are forced to sit and listen. Take the pressure of getting a job out
of the equation and add your joy and love of performing.
Being prepared, having appropriate material and being
confident in your work are key factors. As I always say, auditions are like
dating. You always want the one who doesn't want you. You want the person who
walks in the door, bursting with confidence, owns the room and leaves you
wanting more.
